Disappearance-like practices in the post-9/11 context

Duration: 1 year (renewable after evaluation)

Salary (gross): 2800 Euros
Start date: As soon as possible, no later than 1 June
Project: DISACT (ERC-funded project on enforced disappearances)
Host Institution: University of Cyprus

The ERC-funded DISACT project (https://disacterc.com/) headed by Prof. Iosif Kovras (kovras.iosif@ucy.ac.cy) seeks to appoint a full-time Post-Doctoral Researcher to examine the transformation and transnationalization of disappearance-related practices in the post-9/11 context. The project investigates how the crime of enforced disappearances has evolved in response to the codification and institutionalization of international accountability mechanisms.

The successful candidate will contribute to research on post-9/11 detention practices, extraordinary rendition, offshore detention regimes, and the emergence of transnational repression frameworks. The work requires close engagement with legal texts, court rulings, legislative debates, executive documentation, as well as a careful conceptual assessment of how disappearance-like mechanisms are reconfigured in contemporary settings (especially in the context of US government policy).

Applicants should hold a PhD in law, political science, or a closely related discipline, with demonstrated expertise in public law, international law, security studies, or War on Terror scholarship. Experience working with complex legal material and politically sensitive documents is essential. Familiarity with scholarship on transnational repression will be considered an asset.

The position offers significant intellectual autonomy within a collaborative research environment and provides the opportunity for publications in international, peer-reviewed journals.

Interested candidates should submit the following items, in PDF or Word format, via email to Dr. Michalis Moutselos – Email address: moutselos.michail@ucy.ac.cy by April 5, 2026.
