Historical diffusion of enforced disappearances (Algerian War)

The ERC-funded project DISACT (https://disacterc.com/) headed by Prof. Iosif Kovras (kovras.iosif@ucy.ac.cy) invites applications for a full-time Pre-Doctoral Researcher to contribute to research on the historical emergence and diffusion of enforced disappearance as an international crime. The position is embedded in a larger interdisciplinary team working at the intersection of political science, law and modern history.

The successful candidate will support research on the development of disappearance practices during the Algerian War and their subsequent diffusion across North Africa and beyond. The work involves historically grounded empirical research and engagement with archival material, with an aim towards the reconstruction of institutional and transnational transmission mechanisms of the crime of disappearances.

We are looking for a candidate with an academic background in political violence, modern history, military studies, and/or regional expertise in North Africa is particularly welcome. The candidate should also possess strong French language skills (required); knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable. Candidates should be comfortable working with archival sources, policy documents, memoirs and historical legal material.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a major collective research project while further developing independent scholarly skills within a highly collaborative international team, with the possibility of peer-reviewed international publications.
